Close to 250,000 Americans die each year from cardiac arrest. In over 50,000 of these cases, the outcome could have been different if steps had been taken immediately to help the victim. One of these steps is the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). An AED is a portable device that analyzes a person's heart rate for abnormalities. It can then inform a rescuer if defibrillation is necessary.
EMTs and first responders from police and fire departments are trained in the use of AEDs, but more individuals inquire about these items each year. They are not difficult to use, as the device actually gives voice prompts for a rescuer to follow, but not anyone can just pick one up and use it. A person needs to understand the role of defibrillation, which applies an electrical shock in order to return the heart to a normal pattern, in the rescue process. This is why physicians and medical directors for facilities are the only ones who can prescribe and oversee an AED program. However, many states have developed Good Samaritan laws to protect laymen who use AEDs to try to save someone in need.
